Tools for Food Start-up Pelico
Pelico is a new Bristol start-up that cooks and delivers tasty, fresh meals on bikes. The entrepreneurs behind it asked Gravitywell to help with the considerable challenges they face managing daily operations.
Naturally, Pelico's customers love the menu of fresh, high-quality meals. But they also appreciate ordering 'on-demand' with delivery as quick as just 10 minutes. These core USPs were important to maintain, as feedback showed they were already recognised as part of the brand. But as the buisiness scales, managing the interaction of customers, kitchen team and delivery riders was becoming increasingly difficult. This is where Gravitywell's experience with start-ups, UX and middleware could really make a difference.
The first step was observe a busy period in the kitchen so we visited during lunch to take notes and ask questions. Although the team were professional and quick to respond, it was clear that the current system of whiteboards and sticky labels was already holding them back. Customer experience is key but this focus requires a huge amount of effort and the staff were pushed to the limit as they rushed around the workspaces.
Gravitywell pulled a team together to design a solution that would quickly provide huge efficiency benefits. We also expected it could become a platform for the future of business: we anticipated new features like delivery route-planning, new kitchen hubs, predictive ordering and reporting. The pitch for the first phase was a set of customised Dashboards for the Kitchen, Ops manager and delivery riders. The dashboards would interact with the live Shopify ecommerce setup and helpfully, could be completely disabled if there were any problems.
Pelico loved the concept so we dedicated 4 Agile days to designing, building and deploying a prototype of the new software. Leaning on various proven libraries, we were able to rapidly put together a system that worked really well. We even had time to add a cool feature that automatically notifies the customer by text message when their food is out for delivery! Chris has written an article about the technology used in the Pelico project, if you'd like to know more.
Although as always, the proof is in the upsold pudding. We set a date for the first live trail and went to the kitchen to monitor the new system. Immediately, we could see the difference. The whiteboard was gone and the chefs used a tablet to track orders and mark meals as 'ready to go'. The operations manager no longer needed to dash across workspaces to keep everyone up to date. The whole process seemed a lot smoother and most importantly, it was ready to scale along with the ambitious plans of the growing company.
The project was short and delicious but it illustrated the benefits of working collaboratively with a digital agency that has solid experience with technology start-ups. Designing, building and testing needs to happen fast - there is no time (or budget) for fluff. Working collaboratively and with an agile approach allows us to focus on only what is essential - you'll be amazed what we can achieve in just a few days.
Pelico will be launching a new distribution centre in Bristol city centre in June this year so as to expand their customer base, so be on the look out for their services being made available near you.
