Gmail tip: Who’s giving out your email address?
This is a quick tip on how to find out which website's are giving away your email address to spammers if you're using Gmail.
If you're using Gmail, you may or may not know about it's use of email aliases - they basically allow multiple email addresses to goto the same inbox. All you need to do is include a plus sign in your email address.
If your email address is email@example.com, if you have an email sent to firstname.lastname@example.org the email will still come to your email@example.com address.
Why is this useful you might ask? Well, if you sign up to a website, simply put the name of the website as the second part of the email address. All the emails will come to you but when you start getting emails that were NOT from that website you signed up for, but contain the name of the website in the to: field then you know who has given out your details.
If I was to register with the joomla forum, I would register with the following email address: firstname.lastname@example.org. All mail would still come to my email@example.com address, but if I start recieving spam to firstname.lastname@example.org, I know it was the Joomla forum that gave the email address out.
