English Heritage - The Names of England

In the lead up to Sunday night's EURO 2020 final clash between England and Italy, we’re excited to reveal our latest project with English Heritage — The Names of England.

The interactive St George’s flag, which we designed and developed working closely with the team at English Heritage, carries the surname of almost everyone in England today (including Sterling, Kane and Saka, of course).

Arranged alphabetically from Aamir to Zyla, the names on the flag total 32,000 and each represents personal links to the history that has shaped the country we call home. That history continues to evolve, and the flag provides recognition that everyone living here today will shape the England of tomorrow.

You can explore the history and meaning of your surname, as well as the surnames of others, either by searching or choosing at random. If your surname doesn’t appear on the flag, please submit it to English Heritage who will happily add it.
