Psychologist and author Professor Bruce Hood came to us with a vision to bring academic speakers and event organisers together. The service would be particularly beneficial for students, allowing them to gain experience and credit whilst disseminating their research at public events. He called it ‘Speakezee’.
We worked closely with Bruce to create the brand as well as the online directory of searchable academic profiles. We wanted to imbue the logo with the the concepts of searching and coming together. The final version suggests typing a search term into a search field, with a faded autocomplete following the type cursor. The brand itself needed to be friendly like a social media site with an academic edge. Speakezee is all about the speakers and their profiles so the design needed to be simple and understated.
We detailed with Bruce everything the site needed to include in order to then present a wireframed solution. Meanwhile the dev team were busy creating the functionality for the database environment and refining search and filter tools. There was a lot to think about with regards to registration and profile creation.
Through the design process we tested user stories to ensure the user interface was intuitive and familiar. It goes without saying that the site must be responsive and look just as good on a mobile device as it does on a desktop screen.
Working with Gravitywell has been a delight. I was drawn to their obvious flair for design and elegance but what surprised me was their creative insight and sense of what users of Speakezee would really appreciate. I could tell that they really saw each project as a collaboration rather just another customer to get in and out as quickly as possible.

The site launched to great success, achieving over 500 new sign-ups in just one month. Within 24 hours someone had been contacted through the messaging system to speak at an upcoming conference. It now has close to 1000 speaker profiles and we are very excited by the prospect of working with Prof Bruce on the evolution of Speakezee.
